Longevity in military pilots: 37-year followup of the Navy's "1000 aviators".

چکیده
The 37-year nonmilitary mortality rate for initially healthy aviators was determined in a followup program on the U.S. Navy's "1000 Aviator" cohort. Of the 800 survivors of World War II and the Korean conflict, 95 were found to have died from nonmilitary causes over this followup period. This is markedly less than the 208 that would be expected from a random sample of white American men over a similar period (p less than 0.005). It is also significantly less than the 143 that would have been expected from a group of men who had passed an initial insurance physical (p less than 0.005). Lower-than-expected death rates occurred in all three major categories of cause of death in this age group: cardiovascular, neoplastic, and accidental. The generally good socioeconomic background, the positive genetic influence of long-lived parents, the above average intelligence, and the health and fitness orientation of the military aviator are all thought to be factors contributing to this increased longevity.

Apical hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and arrhythmia in military pilots.
Apical hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (ApHCM), a subtype of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, may be found incidentally in healthy young adults. Arrhythmias are poor prognostic signs, and are the most frequent cause of sudden cardiac death. We present two cases of military aviators with ApHCM. One was a high-performance jet weapon system operator, who had asymptomatic non-sustained ventricular tachycar...
متن کاملCorrective lens use and refractive error among United States Air Force aircrew.
Corrective lens use by military aviators is an important consideration in the design of head-mounted equipment. The United States Air Force (USAF) has periodically monitored lens use by aviators; however, it has been over a decade since the last study. We provide an update on the prevalence of corrective lenses and refractive error among USAF aircrew based on eyeglass orders processed through t...
متن کاملMajor depressive disorder in military aviators: a retrospective study of prevalence.
INTRODUCTION The occurrence of major depressive disorder (MDD) among military pilots and navigators poses questions with respect to medical care and waiver policy, but the prevalence of such disorders is unclear. We studied the epidemiology of MDD in a USAF aircrew population. METHODS The occurrence of MDD was determined for the period 2001-2006 using the USAF Aeromedical Information Manageme...

These authors investigated the potential link between pilots’ exposure to non-ionizing radiation and the incidence of cancer. Mortality statistics were reviewed for 2,740 pilots using standardized mortality and incidence ratios (SMR) & (SIR). Rates were contrasted with a non-exposed referent population. The preferred relative risk model for radiation-induced nonchronic lymphoid leukemia (Beir V...

INTRODUCTION Neck injuries are a common complaint of military aviators which often result in lost workdays, reduced functional performance in flight situations and may restrict or prohibit aviators furthering their flight careers [1]. These injuries have been mainly attributed to the high accelerative (+Gz) loads experienced during routine flying activities and the additional weight of flight h...
